The Blue Chip Song of the Week: "Deep" by Mark McGuinn. Writers: Mark McGuinn/Don Pfrimmer. Producers: Jim Foster/Don Kerce. Label: Blue Flamingo Records/Quarterback Records. CDX: 394
Here's a nice, thoughtful message that should speak to everyone who hears
it.
The Blue Chip Pick Hit of the Week: "Coalmine" by Sara Evans. Writers: Roxie Dean/Ron Harbin/Richie McDonald. Producer: Mark Bright. Label: RCA. Album: "Real Fine Place." CDX: 394
Sara's got the goods. But shouldn't the title be two words instead of one? And who knew that coal miners could inspire this kind of lust?
You will notice a big improvement to The Blue Chip Adult Country Chart this week. We've always been partial to songwriters and great songs. Our subscriber list includes thousands of songwriters, from superhit pros to dedicated amateurs, from Nashville's music row to far away countries. Naturally, we have constant requests to include songwriter credits to the chart.
Well, we may be slow, but once we finally grasp something, we understand completely.
So in response to many requests from readers, we're now including songwriter credits with each chart listing. For good measure, we're also adding producer credits.
Joe Don Rooney and Playboy's 2005 Playmate of the Year Tiffany Fallon are newly wed. The Rascal Flatts guitarist tied the knot with his bunny on April 23rd at One & Only Palmilla in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. If you see Joan and Melissa Rivers, you can tell them the bride worse a strapless Monique L'Huiller gown.
All members of Rascal Flatts performed songs during the post-game celebrations.
Keith Stegall is joining Broken Bow Records as chief operating officer, according to Ken Tucker at Billboard. A talented singer/songwriter in his own right, Stegall's knocked down some major hits producing Alan Jackson.
Meanwhile, Alan Kates is joining the label's publishing company, Magic Mustang Music, as COO.
And the winner is .... the newest Nashville Star winner is singer/songwriter Chris Young from Murfreesboro, TN. He has signed his record deal with RCA and a single is expected this summer.
The New York Post has reported that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman will tie the knot at a Catholic church in Sydney, Australia on June 25th. No confirmation. It's the Post.
Late breaking news from the National Enquirer - it's over! Keith feels it's all too rushed and is trying to cool things!
More sleazy show biz rumor mongering at 11.
By the way, did you know that Jennifer Nettles wasn't the original choice to be Jon Bon Jovi's partner on "Who Says You Can't Go Home?" Keith Urban originally laid down Nettles' tracks, but had to step aside when things couldn't be worked out between the record companies. Enter Nettles. Exit a hit song.
Hmmm. Who has possession of the original master?
Police took control of a suspicious package after it arrived at Louise Mandrell's home in Ashland City a few days ago. Local, state police and the Metro Nashville bomb squad seized the parcel. Once x-rayed and opened, the box was found to carry books, CDs and other harmless items. Officials said the box was sent by a man who has been suspected of stalking an employee of Mandrell's.
Next time you're driving through Savannah, TN, don't be surprised to find yourself rolling down Darryl Worley Way. For his contributions to country music, the city, and a local cancer treatment center, the folks in Savannah have honored Worley by naming a street for him.
Worley's next album is due in August on Neal McCoy's 903 Music label.
Back on November 17th, an on-duty female police officer slow danced onstage with Craig Morgan during a show in Lakeland, FL. Some of the folks in Lakeland felt it was inappropriate behavior for someone on tax-dollar duty. The officer's wrist was firmly slapped last week when she was handed a one-day suspension for her actions.
Welcome to our new subscribers, including Texas singer/songwriter Max Stalling and Crystal Dishmon of Dale Morris Management.
From KurtHanson.com: "The newly-introduced PERFORM Act, which has been publicized as an attempt to treat (and charge) satellite, cable and Internet broadcasters as "distribution services," will also prohibit licensed webcasters from using streaming MP3 for
their webcasts.
"According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, webcasters like Shoutcast, Live365, KEXP, and KCRW would have to forgo their MP3 streams for another technology."
Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell unveiled an official proclamation at RCA Studio B in Nashville on May 1st honoring the late Roy Orbison. The singer/songwriter would have been 70 years old on April 23rd. Orbison recorded "In Dreams," "Only The Lonely" and other hits in Studio B.
By the way, last issue we asked if Roy Orbison belongs in the Country Music Hall of Fame (he's already in the Rock Hall). Surprisingly, at least to me, the overwhelming response was "no".
Stacy Harris of Stacy's Music Row Report wrote, "...It is difficult to say anyone, particularly someone who has been chosen, belongs in any Hall of Fame. But I do have my opinions: Johnny Cash and Bill Monroe do not belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Brenda Lee does not (and Roy Orbison will not) belong in the Country Music Hall of Fame."
When Dugg Collins speaks, people listen. Dugg is a big-label quality singer/songwriter, morning man at KFDI/am in Wichita, former CMA Disc Jockey of the Year, member of the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame, and at least five more Halls of Fame. So Dugg's got some creds. He writes, "I'm sure (Roy Orbison) was a good ole West Texas Country Boy but he's not known for his country music. It's certain he shouldn't be in there ahead of Ferlin Huskey, Sonny James, Jean Shepard, Del Reeves, Stonewall Jackson, Jack Green, Billy Walker and a host of other legends. But what the hell. The way our
business is today those names don't mean a damn thing to those in charge of country today or the Hall of Fame. Maybe five years from now we can consider Bon Jovi for the Country Music Hall of Fame."
Moves & Grooves: Johnny Cash's last recording sessions are set to be released as "American V: A Hundred Highways" on the Fourth of July ..... Country Radio Broadcasters is now accepting inductee nominations for the 2007 Country Music DJ and Radio Hall of Fame Awards. Get all the details at www.crb.org ..... Kris Kristofferson's will receive the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award at
his year's Songwriters Hall of Fame awards diner on June 15th in New York City ... Dixie Chicks will kick-off "Good Morning America's 2006 Summer Concert Series" on May 26th in New York City.
EAVESDROPPING
"Don't forget I've risked the theatre of humiliation before. I've got in there with Van Morrison and George Jones and lived to tell the tale. I'm not posing as a great singer or anything, but I think I've been steadily improving since I gave up cigarettes. Around 1996, I was down to a gasp and a whisper. I thought I'd better drag myself away from the edge of the grave." - Mark Knopfler on singing with Emmylou Harris (James
McNair/The Independent)
"I was really surprised and very grateful that ("Jesus Take The Wheel") did so well. I wasn't quite sure at first how it was going to be accepted, simply because it said Jesus in it. But it obviously worked." - Hillary Lindsey, co-writer (News-Reporter.com)
"I did think that people might consider me totally in alignment with (Toby Keith). I didn't even realize how - I won't say political - but how patriotic his show is. But after all, it was a country tour and I am a country artist. I do admire his support of the troops." - Lee Ann Womack (Jessica Robertson/Rolling Stone)
"I think it is healthy for people to have different views and to have friendly debates about issues. People tend to swear a lot and get really nasty these days. It's disturbing to see that really." - Charlie Daniels (Tom Lounges/Northwest Indiana Times)
"I set goals. It's always been about the music. I was just trying to make the best albums, write the best songs and put on the best shows. It's more of a competition with myself than anything else." - Dierks Bentley (Otis Taylor/TheState.com)
"We were such good friends. Since the time he passed I’ve learned he wasn’t even sick. They said he was doin' pretty well, in fact. Seems he was tired and just went to sleep one morning. He came to see me in Portland on that first tour with Bob (Dylan) and that was the last time I spoke to him in person. It was a big shock. Buck was really influential to my life. I’ll tell you something that a lot of folks may not agree with, but it’s true. Buck was the epitome of rockabilly. He was half rock and roll and half country. He came out of the bars of Southern California, and in deference to a lot of country acts that came out of the Southern gospel tradition, he came from the Bakersfield barrooms." - Merle Haggard on Buck Owens (Jim Reed/ConnectSavannah.com)
"Life is about consequences. You make your choice, you pay the consequences." - Kenny Rogers at CRS-37
Blue Chip Album of the Week: "White Trash With Money" by Toby Keith. Produced by Toby Keith/Lari White. Label: Show Dog Records.
You know, it's fun to scream "You go boy!" (or girl as the case may be) when an artist fights for and receives a huge amount of artistic freedom. The love of pulling for the underdog is deeply embedded in our American psyche. But the reality is that most artists need some help to grab hold of that slippery commercial edge. After all, few true artists have a highly developed sense of what sells out in the cold, hard marketplace. Artists and commercial rainmakers make strange but necessary bedfellows.
So when an artist gets a huge amount of control, it's not unusual to see a lot of self-indulgent, unpopular crap passing as art. Witnss everything Joni Mitchell has released in the past 30 years. And as much as it pains me to say it, witness Waylon Jennings from "I've Always Been Crazy" until the end.
So that's where Toby's at. Every one of his previous albums was a gem, even those that didn't exactly fit his artistic vision. But this one falls short of being memorable.
There's some exceptional material here, but you get the feeling that he's peaked. His past albums have been strong from cut one to cut last. Not this one. You get the feeling that someone needs to say, "Hey Toby, this is mediocre." Maybe he gets mad and pops off, but it's part of the thinning process.
Some of "White Trash..." is incredible. Has
anyone drenched a country song in so much Tom-Jones-meets-Wayne-Cochran horn section and made it work as it does on "Get Drunk And Be Somebody?" It's magic here. But someone should have had the cajones to tell Mr. Keith that well over half this CD is too mediocre to carry his name.
Best Cuts: "Get Drunk And Be Somebody" (T. Keith/Scotty Emerick), "A Little Too Late" (T. Keith/S. Emerick/Dean Dillon), "Ain't No Right Way" (R. Keith/S. Emerick/D. Dillon), "Hell No" (T. Keith/S. Emerick)
